Peridot Formation by GIA. It is found in lava, meteorites and deep in the Earth’s mantle. In this video, watch an animated illustration that helps explain how peridot stone forms in nature. In New Mexico and Arizona, it occurs in nodules and lava flows. Peridot formation occurs deep underground with magma. When an eruption occurs, the peridot crystal moves towards the surface of the Earth's crust and raw peridot appears as nodules in the basalt. Considered the extreme gem, the best peridot gemstone is a pure glass green, though most peridot is yellowish-green. Peridot can also come in large sizes and intense colors to satisfy the most discriminating colored gemstone connoisseur. Peridot jewelry can be very affordable and attractive, even in normal commercial qualities.
